Pernod is an aniseed-based spirit, which has been loved as an aperitif and a zesty cooking product in France for around 200 years. Beverages aniseed during the Babylonian era were known as elixirs with unique qualities to cure a range of stomach and digestive disorders. It has long been recognized that it contains certain healing powers when you combine wormwood and aniseed plants, and has been known to have mood-altering effects.
Cachaça is manufactured from raw sugar cane and the main difference is that the lighter rums are created most generally from what is known as molasses, (a dense syrup produced in the grinding of raw sugar and ranges from light to dark brown in colour) this is a by-product from boiling the cane juice to remove as much sugar as possible. This is produced from aged, distilled fresh sugarcane concentrate.
Cachaça is Brazil’s national spirit and the main component in the popular caipirinha drink, Cachaça ‘s past goes back nearly 5 centuries since plantation owners began offering Cachaca to their slaves after finding it enhanced their vigor. Good Cachaças were being refined during the next two years and eventually citizens in colonial Brazil began consuming it while eating dinner at home. Soon after the abolition of this slavery in 1888, after Brazil was proclaimed a new State.
Gin The first recorded date for gin manufacture in Holland is the early 17th century, although suggestions have been made that it was manufactured in Italy before this. It was developed as a drug in Holland and marketed in pharmacy shops to treat symptoms of nausea, gout and gallstones. The Dutch started flavoring it with juniper, which has medicinal properties of its own, to make it more palatable.
British forces battling in the Low Countries during the Thirty Years War, by the healing powers of gin, were granted ‘Dutch Courage’ during the lengthy campaigns in the hot weather. Finally they began brining it with them back home, where it was still sometimes available in chemists’ shops. Throughout England distillation took place in a small way but it continued on a larger scale, although the consistency was often quite questionable. Vodka is a liquor that arose in Eastern Europe. The term deriving from the Russian word ‘voda’ means water or, as the Poles may claim, ‘woda.’ The first recorded development of vodka in Russia was the end of the 9th century, but the first established distillery at Khylnovsk was around two hundred years later as mentioned in the Vyatka Chronicle of 1174. Poland appears to have distilled vodka much earlier in the 8th century, but it might be more appropriate to consider it a simple brandy as this was a distillation of wine. The first known Polish vodkas originated in the 11th century when they were initially used as drugs and were named ‘gorzalka.’
During the Middle Ages, distilled liquor was used mainly for medicinal purposes and was also a component in gunpowder manufacturing. A British Ambassador to Moscow first mentioned vodka as the Russian national drink in the 14th century, and it was developed in Poland and Finland as the national drink in the mid 16th century.
